I was briefly mentioned in an article about the show I was in last month. It talks about myself and other students work in the show. First article!
My name is Linnie, and I just graduated from college. I went to Corcoran College of Art + Design, for Photojournalism.
The only problem is that that’s not the only thing I wanted to Major in.
When I first got to the Corcoran, all I wanted to do was Photography. I didn’t want to bother with all the other foundation classes they make you take as a freshman. But I had no choice, so I found myself enrolled in some beginner sculpture, and drawing classes
This is where I was introduced to the other parts of the art world. Wood, metal, and ceramics were some of the materials I was introduced to, and I can’t believe that I hadn’t found these things earlier.
Through my 4 years at Corcoran, I took every possibility to get into a class that had me working with my hands and not just with photo chemicals, or a computer. In doing so, I found that not only did I want to be something beyond a photographer, but that I needed to figure out a way to have this outlet in my life at all times if possible.
There were a few semesters that I just wasn’t able to work it in, but my last semester of senior year I worked it out so that I was able to take a wheel throwing, woodworking and fabrication, and a screenwriting class where in the end we made short films.
Combined with our final thesis projects, I found myself consumed with creative energy, and was actually very reluctant to finish and leave school.
In the end, I became great friends with my wood professor and will be his teacher’s assistant in the fall and hopefully for a long time after that.
Finally, I have a place to be creative and share with people the things I have created and the new stuff I get to work on.
